Programs and Services for Senior Citizens

Senior Luncheons

This event is one of the most established and popular Family Center programs. Held twice per month with an average attendance of 40, Senior Luncheons provide a place for Hampden seniors to congregate and share in fellowship. A hot meal is preceded by a presentation on an issue facing seniors (such as heart health or taxes.) This program provides a perfect opportunity for other organizations and social outreach services to talk to seniors and provide them with health and wellness information. Most importantly (to the seniors) the meal is followed by Bingo and a chance to laugh and win prizes. The Senior Luncheon program allows the Center to stay in touch with its seniors and continue to create programs that are much needed.

Computer Class for Seniors

This extremely popular program gives 12-15 seniors basic computer skills, how to operate Windows, Microsoft Word, Excel, and how to access the Internet. Taught by a volunteer each week, instruction is customized to the individual. Each student has access to a computer from which to learn, and has one-on-one learning opportunities. The classes have received excellent reviews for quality of teaching and patience with students’ pace of learning.

100 Pies for Hampden

This program expands on the Meals on Wheels concept to identify neighborhood seniors who would benefit from seeing a friendly face before the Thanksgiving holiday. Children from the Family Center’s programs collaborate with local businesses to identify senior citizens in need; and secure enough pies to provide a pie for each senior citizen. The children, accompanied by adult team leaders, visit each senior to wish them a good holiday and deliver a pie. This program is very popular with young and old alike, and provides an opportunity to build a communication link between the very old and very young in Hampden.
